90th Durham fair begins with non-stop activity

This news is just coming

90th Durham Fair.

With many local schools running on a half-day schedule, midday was bustling with activity as kids took advantage of the unlimited ride wristbands. The wristbands are a Friday afternoon favorite, allowing unlimited rides for the purchaser until 6 p.m.

Richard Cote, of Middletown, was there with his children Austin and Sydney and despite being burdened by a huge fish that Austin won, was enthusiastic.

“There are a lot a families here having a great time,” Cote said as Sydney exclaimed, “We only have 20 minutes left, let’s go.”

People come to the fair for different reasons and being the largest volunteer agricultural fair in the country, the Durham Fair has something for everyone. There’s enough music, food and fun to go around. Some go for the crafts, while others gathered for the newly added truck and SUV pull.

Many people came for the food — from fried dough to apple fritters and blooming onions.

“Oh, the food is my favorite, the souvlaki (a Greek specialty),” Josephine Ameleto said.

There are different events scheduled throughout the weekend, and daily schedules are available at numerous information booths on the grounds.

Children were delighted with the many animals, several of the children only weeks old.

As fair goers headed up the big hill, they were greeted by a brief history of the fair, dating back to 1916. As reported in the Penny Press, the precursor to The Middletown Press, the 1st Durham Fair was kicked off on Oct. 4, 1916 with a parade. The parade was eventually discontinued in 1925 due to traffic concerns, something modern day fair-goers can appreciate.

In the youth building, Middletown 4th-grader Emma Ushchak beamed over the prizes she won in the contests she had entered. Ushchak said she has entered items in the fair since she was first eligible at age 5. Her 4-year-old brother Alexander said he’s going to enter his trains next year

A jeweler's gem of a house is a former bank

This news is just coming a 1hour the news about jeweler Cathy Calhoun
SPRING CITY — When jeweler Cathy Calhoun returned to the site of her old job, she found a gem: a building ripe for renovation. She's now taken the quirky former bank, where she worked as a teller in the 1970s, and turned it into a home that blends both history and modern luxury.

The heart of the place is the vaults. Really, how many other people can boast vaults — ones that still had valuables inside?

The vault on the main floor of the 1872 building houses shiny safe-deposit boxes, some of which Calhoun has opened. "I still have 222 boxes to get drilled open. As I finish a project in the house, I'll allow myself to go through 50," says Calhoun. "That's my incentive to finish projects."

The paraphernalia found during restoration hangs on the walls of the vault, which she has turned into a gleaming bar, and some items are donated to local historical societies.

Downstairs there's another vault — this one was used for most of the cash, and bank and stock ledgers.

It's now Calhoun's sauna.

The door doesn't function but it sits, more than a foot thick, about halfway ajar.

When the bank was robbed in 1921, hostages were kept in the basement vault.

The smallest vault, which belonged to the head teller and is near the front door, is now an entertainment center.

India vs Pakistan live streaming ICC Champions Trophy 2009

Today a great match between India and Pakistan

The India vs Pakistan cricket match today is estimated to attract several million viewers, and defeat is usually unacceptable for both teams.

India should be inspired by the fact that they have never lost to Pakistan in an International Cricket Council (ICC) in the battle for the trophy, even with the team’s fair share of injuries.

India and Pakistani cricket teams have played each other in non-test-playing nations such as Canada (Toronto) or the United Arab Emirates (Sharjah), but didn’t have the same number of viewers.

Here are a few live streaming sites where you can watch the match, but they are slow…and frustrating. Sopcast requires the download of software before you can watch it. It may be easier to wait until it is over and watch the video of it online.

Carter 'Racism' Claim Draws Widespread Criticism

Former President Jimmy Carter drew widespread criticism Wednesday for saying in an interview that Rep. Joe Wilson's "You lie!" outburst last week was "based on racism" and that an "overwhelming portion" of similar demonstrations against President Obama are rooted in bigotry.

Obama's supporters have attributed racist motives to some opponents of his health care plan for weeks, but Carter is the highest-profile person so far to push that claim.

While some anti-Obama demonstrators have been seen carrying over-the-top or racially offensive signs, administration critics say Carter is flat wrong to claim that those fringe protesters make up the bulk of Obama's detractors.

Upon Return, Sanford Admits Extramarital Affair

Upon Return, Sanford Admits Extramarital Affair

The news alart of political affair which is held in Columbia in news conferance jest
coming few hours ago the news

At a news conference in Columbia, S.C., Gov. Mark Sanford has now admitted that he had an extramarital affair with someone in Argentina, as he attempted to explain his mysterious disappearance from the state last week.

He said he had developed a relationship with someone in Argentina during the past year. Mr. Sanford returned from Buenos Aires this morning, after leaving the state capital last Thursday. His whereabouts had become a source of nearly national speculation, with aides first saying they didn’t know where he was, then saying he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail but unreachable.

It wasn’t until this morning that Mr. Sanford’s real location became known when a reporter for The State confronted him as he returned via the Atlanta airport.

Mr. Sanford also said he would resign from his position as head of the Republican Governors Association.

As for his wife Jenny, he said they had been working through this for the last five months. He and his wife have four boys.

“I hurt her. I hurt you all. I hurt my wife. I hurt my boys,” he said, and asked forgiveness from everyone.

As for the affair, Mr. Sanford said the two had met innocently — he used that word more than once, and then about a year ago, the casual acquaintance evolved into something more.

The news conference began rather oddly, with Mr. Sanford rambling about his love for the Appalachian trail, his exhaustion from a legislative battle over the federal stimulus and a need to get away from the public eye.

But he then began issuing apologies to family, his staff and friends like Tom Davis, as well as to all people of faith for his sins. It then began to become apparent that Mr. Sanford was about to disclose something rather personal.

Mr. Sanford is the second politician within about a week to divulge an extramarital affair. Last week, Senator John Ensign, Republican of Nevada, disclosed that he had had a relationship with someone who worked on his campaign staff.

In this instance, several Republican rivals and Democrats had complained loudly that Mr. Sanford had been irresponsible given his disappearance from the state — without notice of communication about his whereabouts. He took the blame today, saying that he had not intended for his staff to be put in the middle, and appeared a bit emotional as he continued to make apologies.

The governor had been considered a rising star among conservatives, but this bizarre turn of events has changed his prospects, at least for the time being.

Football coach shot dead in tornado-hit Iowa town

It is big news alart the high school football coach died in tornado-hit Iowa town
DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - A high school football coach in the midwestern United States whose team became a symbol of recovery from a deadly 2008 tornado was shot and killed on Wednesday, officials said.

A suspect was in custody after Ed Thomas was shot in the head in the Aplington-Parkersburg high school's weight-training room and airlifted to a hospital where he died, said officials with the school and Butler County in Iowa.

Some students witnessed the attack but none was hurt. The suspect was not identified and the motive was not immediately known.

"It was a senseless act in our community this morning," school superintendent Jon Thompson said.

A tornado struck Parkersburg and nearby New Hartford on May 25, 2008, killing eight people and damaging the high school and flattening hundreds of homes.

Thomas, the football team's long-time coach, spearheaded the rebuilding and the two-time state champions resumed play on their new field in September, which was widely reported as a morale boost for the community's 1,900 residents.

NEW YORK -- Two league sources confirm that Milwaukee and San Antonio have agreed to the framework of a deal that would send Richard Jefferson to San Antonio for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto. The Bucks are sending Jefferson away less than a year after acquiring the scoring forward in a draft day trade last season for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons. Jefferson's contract has two years and $29.2 million remaining on it.
